Lib Dems would increase size of “Green Heart” four-fold

The "Green Heart" in the Broad Marsh area of Nottingham

The Green Heart at Broad Marsh is lovely. Really, it is. But at barely 5% of the entire 20-acre site, it's more of a green postage stamp than the bold urban park our city deserves.

Given local people said they wanted much more green space than this, we think Nottingham can do better. Four times better.

Nottingham Lib Dems championed green space at Broad Marsh long before it became council policy, and we welcome any green space.

We're calling on new owners, Homes England and the council to expand the Green Heart four-fold, making it 20% of the site of the old Broad Marsh shopping centre. The council sold the land to Homes England last year, but they can still exert some influence over the land as Homes England is run by the Government.

The Liberal Democrats believe the local Labour Council needs to talk to their colleagues in Westminster and persuade Home England to do the right thing, and increase the green space in their plans for the Broad Marsh site.

In the “Big Conversation” Nottingham residents said loud and clear that they wanted nature here.

Those views shouldn't be quietly buried. Residents of the city need to be top of mind when decisions like this are being made. This will not only be a big transformation of Castle Ward, but of the city as a whole.

Nottingham deserves better than a token effort. Let's make this something truly special.
